One of the most unique ways to experience art in Washington, DC is to become an artist for a day. Not just a studio artist, but a muralist ready to paint large masterpieces full of movement and passion.

Open Walls are interactive outdoor art spots around the city, where you can see walls fulls of murals and artwork by some of the most talented artists from all around the world.

If you are celebrating a birthday, planning a weekend BBQ party with your friends, or visiting DC and want to experience something memorable, roll up your sleeves and create your own mural.

The walls permitted and suitable for a mural party are:
Sherman Wall
Edgewood Wall
Perry Center

We provide art supplies, paint and tables for a donation. All proceeds go to maintaining Open Walls.

Please be respectful, paint only in the designated areas. Read the rules and help us maintain this fun creative experience for all.

Call for Art: Open Wall Fest

If you would like to participate in OPEN WALLS FEST (November 4-11) as an artist please send us an email with a link to your portfolio or a few examples of your work. Include a request what day you would like to paint and how large area you will use. Due to a large interest in this program, we do not guarantee that everyone will get a spot but we will do our best to accommodate all artists. The deadline for all applications is November 2, 2011.

New Walls: Ivy City and Perry Center

We are happy to announce new additions to our program. The wall at Perry Center is by invitations only. The wall in Ivy City is awaiting the final approval and we hope to have it ready for Open Walls @ DCWEEK.

Welcome to Garfield Park

The newest Open Wall has been established in collaboration with The Friends of Garfield Park with permission from Department of Transportation with a goal to create a unique curatorial project and to maintain the space.

Dragon Fly

Dave Adams shared some of his beautiful footage of Geoff Chang aka Toyz Are Us, a local b-boy and instructor at Words Beats and Life in Washington, DC. It was shot in September at the Edgewood Mural in Northeast Washington, D.C. with a Phantom HD and a set of Superspeed Zeiss Primes. Shots range from 300fps to 1000fps. This footage will be featured in the documentary “The District Rhyme” that Dave is working on with Emre Izat and Chris Tuss. Music in the clip is by DJ Shadow: “Building Steam with a Grain of Salt.” The section of the mural was created by Joshua Mays. Open Wall is attached to this mural.

3 Pyramids Collective on Sherman Wall

Bobby Moore and LightUp of 3 Pyramids Collective visited Sherman Wall on a cold Sunday, when the sun came up for a few hours only. They managed to paint a large section of the wall.
