Are you familiar with the packing tape sculptures by Mark Jenkins? If not, this is your chance to learn everything about them. If you are Mark’s fan, you already know that right now he is working with CON on a huge surprise show in The Fridge.

And this weekend, you will get a chance to work with Sandra Fernandez who will teach you how to create your own tape cast of any object or your body. Bring a small object (a vase for example) to to create a cast of. Sandra is an artist living in the greater DC area. She has worked with Mark for many years and is one of the few masters of this technique in the world.

The tape sculpture workshop is on Sunday, April 4, 2010 from 2pm to 4pm in The Freezer, 633 E Street SE (rear alley), Washington, DC. It is in walking distance from Eastern Market Metro Station. Bring your friends. Suitable for all ages. Suggested donation $30 (sliding scale). Duration 2 hours. The workshop will be mostly indoors. Al supplies provided. We started the first of the mural series titled “Small Wall Big Imagination” last Sunday. Come finish it with us this week. DC Creates Public Art – Rachel Dickerson / DCCAH (for artists, $donation)

The workshops is intended to serve needs of artists who are interested in participating in DC Commission on the Arts Humanities’ grant process. Rachel Dickerson will present the history and recent accomplishments in public art and selected projects that were supported with their funding. She will explain the entire process of application, selection and evaluation of the grantees. In the second half of the workshop she will work individually with the participants so they present their artistic ideas in the most comprehensive and clear manner to the grant reviewers. Bring your ideas, notebook and pen.

Silkscreening – Rat and Cesar Maxit (all ages, $30, work clothes)

Rat and Cesar will guide us through various ways of making screens, selecting the right inks and tools and finally pulling a nice and even coats on paper or t-shirts. Magic Class – David London (all ages, $30)

In David’s mind, Magic and Magic Tricks, are two very different things. This class will explore both. Through a crash course in illusion, we will examine how we interact with reality. You will go home with many more questions than you came in with, as well as 3 tricks you can amuse and amaze your friends with. David London is a magician, and believes everyone else is as well. Trained in sleight of hand and stage magic, David’s approach to magic also includes film making, puppetry, storytelling, experimental performance, and anything else necessary to create a magical experience. He is the creator of four original theatrical productions, the author of seven manuscripts on magic and illusion, and the editor of Beyond The Smoke and Mirrors- A Magazine devoted to magic and creativity.

Small Wall Big Imagination is three-session workshop in The Fridge. The instructors are CON, CRI and ULTRA. They will guide the participants through technical and artistic aspects of aerosol art. We will learn step by step how to create a large scale mural from sketching to final details. All with spray paint. The mural will be finished in three weeks (three workshops).

Tim Conlon is an artist known for large-scale murals, graffiti art, and works on canvas. Conlon’s work has been featured in museums and galleries across the country, including the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Conlon?s work has appeared in feature films, television ads, art books and magazines, custom clothing designs, and on large street billboard advertising. Conlon is also an animator, illustrator, web designer, and video editor.

Bring your camera to the next workshop at G40. Rosina Teri Memolo will share her knowledge about photography. Whether you are taking pictures of objects, buildings, art or people, she will give you hints and help you take sharp looking photos. There will be some technical talk and explanations too, learning what is aperture, focus, composition, exposure… Washington, DC photographer, Rosina “Teri” Memolo has provided photographic services for multiple corporate clients and has contributed to many magazines including Swindle, While You Were Sleeping, People, The Source and Urb as well as several notable artist publications and graffiti books.

Art Makes Headlines 201 – Sarah Massey (for artists, $30)

Do you ever wonder how an artist or show suddenly shows up in the newspaper and TV news? How did they get the coverage? Doesn’t your project also deserve press attention? Of course your work deserves to be broadcast too; and, with knowledge of how the press functions and a touch of creativity, your project can make headlines. This workshop will cover how to view your art through a news lens and create a story that the press will want to tell. You will learn how to frame your story for timeliness and to create media messages that will resonate with media audiences. The class will focus on creating and implementing a media work plan: creating a calendar for media outreach, practice calling the press, and practice delivering your messages on camera. From this workshop, you will be ready to offer stories to the press and respond to media inquiries.

Peter K will share his knowledge of color that he learned from his friends at the National Institutes of Health as well as the artists in Albus Cavus. We will explore our perception of color, its impact on our health and mood and try to figure out the colors that suit us the most. This workshop will open the series of 16 workshops at G 40: The Summit.

The workshop is held at G 40: The Summit on 223 23rd Street, Arlington, VA on March 4, 2010 from 6pm to 8pm. Arrive a minute early and wear working clothes. The fee for the class is $25. Suitable for all ages.

G40: The Summit is the newest project by Art Whino. The gallery took over an old office building in Crystal City and turned it into a huge gallery full of installations, sculptures, canvases… There is over 500 artists in the show! For more information about G40, please visit Art Whino’s website.

Albus Cavus artists: CRI, RVLTN, RAIN, JAZI, DECOY, Peter K, Rosina Photo, CON and ULTRA have transformed a section of the 8th floor. We are also coordinating art workshops at G40.
